OUR WORK
Security Solutions for Protected Areas
ESPA are specialists at advising on ranger welfare and personnel security, maintenance of park/reserve boundary integrity, and every aspect of security risk planning. Our risk assessments cover detailed criteria that include physical, ecological, financial and human rights risks, and follow up implementation of the required security solutions includes taking into consideration the situation of the protected area’s inhabitants and surrounding populations.

Security Risk Assessments:
We provide detailed threat assessments, security surveys and risk analyses in order to advise on operational structure, procurement and training.
Auditing:
We have considerable expertise in providing audits for existing projects and/or bodies. There are many things that may require independent scrutiny such as capability, compliance, structure, and use of funding. The audit function is very much underused in the conservation sector and we actively encourage NGOs and other bodies to open their doors to scrutiny. Some projects are in real need of an independent ‘health-check’.
Stop-Gap Cover:
ESPA considers the best solution to securing vulnerable wildlife and local communities is through open communication and partnerships. However, we recognise that some protected areas are subject to incursion or attacks by armed militias, in which instance the lives of protected area personnel and the populations in proximity are at heightened risk.
In this situation, ESPA can provide practical operational support until the threat has reduced, including advising on security strategies, evacuation plans, defensive de-escalation and, as a last resort, can provide additional personnel to the protected area if requested.
